Biblically Correct Evangelism Starts With...

Quoting Martyn Lloyd-Jones . . .

All you do in evangelism, some say, is to call people to 'come to Christ', and you offer forgiveness. You call upon them to 'decide for Christ'. They generally go on to say that if you afterwards go to the other meetings you will learn a deeper doctrine, a profound truth; but in an evangelistic meeting there is only a simple message - it is "Come to Jesus; come to Christ, decide for Him. If you want forgiveness, here it is". Now as I understand [Romans 6:17], such teaching is not only dangerous, but utterly un-scriptural. That is why this matter is of such tremendous importance. That is not the message the Roman Christians had believed, otherwise Paul could not have drawn these great deductions from it. What then is it? 'The form of doctrine delivered them' was the full doctrine that Paul had been elaborating on throughout this Epistle to the Romans - nothing less. The message of evangelism is a message that starts with . . . - - - . . .

man in sin under the wrath of a holy God.

Paul starts with that way back in chapter 1, in verses 16, 17, and 18.
"I'm not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God unto salvation to everyone that believeth; to the Jew first and also to the Greek. For therein is the righteousness of God from faith to faith; as it is written, the just shall live by faith. For (because) the wrath of God is (already) revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men who hold (down) the truth in unrighteousness." That is an essential part of the message.

You can not skate lightly over and around sin in evangelism, and say to people "do not bother about repentance now. Come to Christ first, you can repent afterwards." No! The doctrine of sin is a vital part of this 'form of doctrine' [mentioned in Romans 6:17] that produces the amazing result. We all have to see ourselves under condemnation, bound for hell, hopeless and helpless in sin and under the wrath of god. We have to see the foul, terrible nature of such a condition, its slavery to sin and Satan, and the terrible end to which it inevitably leads. That is part of the message.

Then comes the utter hopeless of all human striving and effort to achieve salvation. It took Paul most of chapters 1, 2, and 3 of Romans to unfold this aspect of the doctrine. The Gentiles with their philosophy cannot deliver themselves, neither can the Jew, the man who boasted that because he had the Law a happy future was assured to him. 'No', says Paul, "you are no better than the Gentile. Knowledge of the law does not save; you have to keep the Law." So he concludes "that there is no difference; all have sinned and come short of the glory of God". The whole human race has failed. You cannot save yourself. It matters not at all how good and moral and excellent and religious you may be. This counts for nothing. Whether you are circumcised or not does not matter; and all mortality is useless in and of itself. Man by his own effort cannot save himself. Paul elaborates the teaching to remind them of it, and to confirm them in it.

This is all a part of evangelism. Evangelism does not consist in telling stories and playing on people's emotions, and then pressing them to a decision at the end without any true knowledge on their part of what they are doing. No, but it is the outlining of this 'form of doctrine', this message, this truth. Then you go on to tell them that from this complete hopelessness and helplessness and despair God has provided a way of escape: "Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood". That is the message, that is the "form of doctrine that has been delivered". That is the immediate agency that produces this great change.

Walter Chantry Quote

"How many souls have been led to vain confidence by a man-made, evangelistic formula? How many are sent home from evangelistic services with calm, who should have gone away grieved and disturbed as the rich young ruler who approached Jesus? How many unsaved children have been given assurance by the teachers of Bible classes, so that they have ceased to seek God for salvation?" --Walter Chantry

One Day During 'The Great Awakening' . . .

Quoting George Whitefield . . . Journal entry from Sunday, March 4, 1739 - - Arose much refreshed in spirit and gave my early attendants a warm exhortation as usual. Went to Newgate and preached with power to an exceedingly thronged congregation. Then hastened to Hanham Mount, three miles from the city, where the miners live altogether. God favoured us in the weather. Over four thousand were ready to hear me, and God enabled me to preach with the demonstration of the Spirit. The ground not being high enough, I stood upon a table and the sight of the people covering the green fields, and their deep attention, pleased me much. I hope that same Lord, who fed so many thousands with bodily bread, will feed all their souls with the Bread which cometh down from Heaven, for many came from far. At four in the afternoon, I went to the mount on Rose Green and preached to over fourteen thousand souls. God was so good to allow all to be able to hear me. I think it was worth while to come many miles to see such a sight. I spoke with great freedom, but thought all the while, as I do continually, when I ascend the mount, that hereafter I shall suffer, as well as speak, for my Master's sake. Lord, strengthen me for that hour. Lord, I believe (O help my unbelief!) that Thy grace will be more sufficient for me. In the evening I expounded [theQuoting George Whitefield . . . Jonathan Edwards, Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God Quotes

“Therefore, let every one that is out of Christ, now awake and fly from the wrath to come.”

"Jonathan Edwards"

“There is nothing that keeps wicked men at any one moment out of hell, but the mere pleasure of God…”

“God certainly has made no promises either of eternal life, or of any deliverance or preservation from eternal death, but what are contained in the covenant of grace, the promises that are given in Christ, in whom all the promises are yea and amen.”

“Your wickedness makes you as it were heavy as lead, and to tend downwards with great weight and pressure towards hell; and if God should let you go, you would immediately sink and swiftly descend and plunge into the bottomless gulf…”

“The wrath of Almighty God is now undoubtedly hanging over a great part of this congregation: Let every one fly out of Sodom: ‘Hasten and escape for your lives, look not behind you, escape to the mountain, lest ye be consumed.’”

True Christianity

“If you are going to walk with Jesus Christ, you are going to be opposed ... "In our days, to be a true Christian is really to become a scandal.”

Witnessing

“If the devil never roars, the Church will never sing! God is not doing much if the devil is not awake and busy. Depend upon it,
that a working Christ makes a raging devil! When you hear ill reports, cruel speeches, threats, taunts and the like, believe that the
Lord is among His people and is working gloriously." Charles Spurgeon"

UNA Campus Outreach

Went to the UNA Campus on Sep. 4, 2012 to share the Gospel with the students. Pastor Josh Miller from Tharptown Baptist Church joined me. I was loaded up with tracts and hit the campus at our spot we set up at right across from the student union. We handed out hundreds of tracts and had a few interesting conversations also. I had a conversation with a student named Ethan. I handed him a tract he walked away and a few minutes later he returned to ask me what this was about. I told Ethan that it was a Gospel tract and asked if he knew what the Gospel was. Ethan said he was a Christian and went to a Baptist Church not to far from my own Church in our small town of Muscle Shoals Alabama. He said what do you mean by the Gospel. You mean the New Testament, the Bible, the gospel of John ect. I said Ethan let me give you this scenario I have a knife in my back and have 2 minutes to live how do I inherit eternal life help me please. He really didn't know what to say. He could not articulate the Gospel to me at all. I asked him because he has gone to his church for awhile do they even share the Gospel with you at your church? He insisted ya but couldn't share it with me.( Are our churches even equipping its people on how to present the biblical gospel.).I said Ethan if you say you are a Christian you should know what the Gospel is and if your Church is not preaching the Gospel you need to get out of that Church. He just looked at me and I said let me tell you what the Gospel is and proceeded to take him through the Law of God and the Grace of God, pleading with him to Repent and Believe and put his trust in Jesus Christ Alone. We were able to speak for about twenty minutes and I just pray the LORD will open up Ethan's eyes to the Glorious Gospel.

Josh handed a tract to a young man from Turkey named John. He was not a practicing Muslim and said he was interested in religion and the things of God and was open to talk about these things. Josh spoke with him for a few minutes as John was off to class and in a bit of a hurry. We told John to read the tract and open up his Bible (he said he had one we asked him) and to search these things out to see if they are true. We also told him if he has any questions for us that we are on the campus alot and to stop by and talk to us. He said he would do that. The UNA Campus is filled with many foreign students from China, the Middle Eastern country's and is a wide open mission field and we don't see many people out here sharing the Gospel with these students. The guy who is in charge of the Baptist campus ministry passed us by and Josh tried to give him a tract not knowing that he was the Baptist campus ministry guy. He didn't take our tract, never does and just ignores us out there and has not said anything to us for at least the time I have been going out to the campus which is about 31/2 years now. Its a tragedy indeed. We have never seen him passing out tracts or even questioning us on what we are handing out to see if we were peddling a false Gospel. But in closing friends this is a mission field right in our own back yards. There are many public college campuses around that have no Gospel witness. Please get out of your comfort zones and be bold for Christ. For any one who wants to do ministry without spending thousands of dollars to go out of country there is a mission field right here through out America called the college campus. The harvest is white and the laborers are few. Go share your faith.

The Distinguishing Marks of False Teachers by Thomas Brooks

‘But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction. And many shall follow their pernicious ways; by reason of whom the way of truth shall be evil spoken of. And through covetousness shall they with feigned words make merchandise of you: whose judgment now of a long time lingereth not, and their damnation slumbereth not.‘ 2Peter2:1-3

Satan labors with all his strength by false teachers, which are his messengers and ambassadors, to deceive, delude and forever destroy the precious souls of men. The prophet Jeremiah declared, ‘And I have seen folly in the prophets of Samaria; they prophesied in Baal, and caused my people Israel to err.’ (Jeremiah 23;13). And through the prophet Micah, the Lord himself complained ‘Thus saith the LORD concerning the prophets that make my people err,’ (Micah 3.5a). They seduce them and carry them out of the right way into by-paths and blind thickets of error, blasphemy and wickedness, where they are lost forever. Jesus Himself warned, ‘Beware of false prophets which come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves’ (Matthew 7:15) These scoundrels lick and suck blood of souls, ‘Beware of dogs, beware of evil workers,’ (Phil. 3:2) These evil men kiss and kill; they cry, ‘Peace, Peace’ until souls fall into everlasting flames (see Proverbs 7) Now the best way to deliver poor souls from being deluded and destroyed by these messengers of Satan is to display them in their true colors, so that being known poor souls may shun them, and flee from them as hell itself. Now you may know a false teacher by the following distinguishing marks.

1.The first distinguishing mark is that they are men-pleasers. They preach more to please the ear than to profit the heart. Isaiah thus described the longing of God’s rebellious people. ‘Which say to the seers, See not; and to the prophets, Prophesy not unto us right things, speak unto us smooth things, prophesy deceits:’ (lsaiah 30:10). And again the Lord complained through Jeremiah in these words; ‘A wonderful and horrible thing is committed in the land; The prophets prophesy falsely, and the priests bear rule by their means, and my people love to have it so and what will ye do in the end thereof?’ (Jer 5.30,31) These men handle the holy things rather with wit and entertainment than with godly fear and reverence. False teachers are soul-destroyers. They are like evil surgeons, that skin over the wound, but never heal it. Flattery destroyed Ahab and Herod, Nero and Alexander. False teachers are hell’s great enrichers. It is not bitter, but flattering words which do all the mischief, said Valerian, the Roman emperor. Such smooth teachers are sweet soul-poisoners (Jeremiah 23:16,17)
2.The second distinguishing mark of false teachers is that they are notable for casting dirt, scorn and reproach upon the person, names, and credits of Christ’s most faithful ambassadors. Thus Korah, Dathan, and Abiram charged Moses and Aaron that they took too much upon themselves, seeing all the congregation was holy (Numbers 16:3). ‘You take’, they said, ‘too much state, too much power, too much honor, too much holiness on you; for what are you more than others, that you take so much upon you?’ And likewise Ahab’s false priests fell, upon good Micaiah, paying him with fits and fists instead of a reasonable reply (see I Kings 22 10-26). Yes, even Paul, that great apostle of the Gentiles, had his ministry undermined and his reputation blasted by false teachers: ‘For his letters,’ they say, ‘are weighty and powerful; but his bodily presence is weak, and his speech contemptible.’ (2 Corinthians 10:10). They rather despise him than admire him; they look upon him as a dunce rather than a doctor. And indeed the same harsh treatment had our Lord Jesus from the scribes and Pharisees, who labored as if their life depended on it, to construct their own esteem upon the ruins of His reputation. And never did the devil have a more prosperous business in this way than he does in these days ( Matthew 27:63). Oh, the dirt, the filth, the scorn that is thrown upon those of whom the world is not worthy! I suppose false teachers fail to consider that saying of Augustine ‘He that willingly takes my good name unwillingly adds to my reward’
3.The third distinguishing mark of false teachers is that they spew out the devices and visions of their own heads and hearts. The Lord said to me. ‘Then the LORD said unto me, The prophets prophesy lies in my name I sent them not, neither have commanded them, neither spake unto them: they prophesy unto you a false vision and divination, and thing of nought, and the deceit of their heart.’ (Jeremiah 14:14). ‘Thus saith the LORD of hosts, Hearken not unto the words of the prophets that prophesy unto you: they make you vain: they speak a vision of their own heart, and not out of the mouth of the Lord.’ (Jeremiah 23:16). Are there not multitudes in this nation whose visions are but golden delusions, lying vanities, brainsick fantasies? These are presently Satan’s great benefactors, but one day divine justice will hang them up in hell as the greatest malefactors, unless the physician of souls graciously delivers them.
4.The fourth distinguishing mark of false teachers is that they easily pass over the great and weighty things both out of the law and the gospel, and dwell mostly upon these things that are of the least importance and concern to the souls of men. Thus Paul warned Timothy: ‘Now the end of the commandment is charity out of a pure heart, and of a good conscience, and of faith unfeigned: From which some having swerved have turned aside unto vain jangling. Desiring to be teachers of the law, understanding neither what they say, nor whereof they affirm.’ (I Timothy 1:5-7). And our Lord rebuked the Pharisees: ‘Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees. hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy and faith: these ought ye have done, and not to leave the other undone.’ (Matthew 23:23). False teachers are meticulous in the lesser things of the law, and quite negligent in the greatest! Once more the Apostle Paul spoke strong words to Timothy when he said: ‘If any man teach otherwise, and consent not to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which is according to godliness, He is proud, knowing nothing, but doting about questions and strifes of words, whereof cometh envy, strife, railings, evil surmisings, Perverse disputings of men of corrupt minds, and destitute of the truth, supposing that gain is godliness: from such withdraw thyself’ (I Timothy 6:3-5). If such false teachers are not genuine hypocrites, I know nothing (Romans 2:21.22). The earth groans to bear such wicked men, and hell is fitted for them.
5.The fifth distinguishing mark of false teachers is that they cleverly disguise their dangerous principles and soul-deceiving notions with very attractive speeches and golden expressions. Many in these days are bewitched and deceived by the magnificent words, lofty strains- and stately terms of deceivers, such as illumination, revelation, and deification. As harlots paint their faces and adorn and perfume their beds, the better to allure and deceive simple souls, so false teachers will put a great deal of paint and garnish upon their most dangerous principles and blasphemies, in order that they may better deceive and delude poor ignorant souls. They know that sugared poison goes down sweetly: they wrap up their pernicious, soul-killing pills in gold. In the days of Hadrian the emperor, there was a man Ben-Cosbi who gathered a multitude of Jews together, and called himself Bencocuba, the son of a star, applying the promise of Numbers 24:17 to himself, but he proved to be Bar~chosaba, the son of a lie. And so will all false teachers, for all their lofty expressions will prove at last to be the sons of lies.
6.The sixth distinguishing mark of false teachers is that they strive more earnestly to win men over to their opinions, than to improve their behavior. The Lord Jesus again spoke with soberness when He said ‘Woe unto you scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye compass sea and land to make one proselyte, and when he is made, ye make him twofold more the child of hell than yourselves’ (Matthew 23:15). They busy themselves, most about men’s heads. Their work is not to better men’s hearts and mend their lives; and in this they are much like their father the devil, who will spare no pains to gain converts.
7.The seventh distinguishing mark of false teachers is that they exploit their followers through covetousness. The Apostle Peter, nearing his own death (see 2 Peter 1:12-15), warned his followers: ‘But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction. And many shall follow their pernicious ways; by reason of whom the way of truth shall he evil spoken of. And through covetousness shall they with feigned words make merchandise of you: whose judgment now of a long time lingereth not, and their damnation slumbereth not.’ (2 Peter 2:1-3). They eye your goods more than your good; and care more for serving themselves, than the saving of your souls. So long as they have your possessions, they care not that Satan possess your souls (Revelation 18:11-13). In order that they may better pick your pocket, they will hold forth such principles as are very indulgent to the flesh. False teachers are the great worshippers of the golden calf, as the Lord declares: ‘For from the least of them even unto the greatest of them every one is given to covetousness, and from the prophet even unto the priest every one dealeth falsely’ (Jer.6: 13). Crates threw his money into the sea, resolving to drown it, lest it should drown him. But false teachers care not who they drown, so long as they may have their money.

Now by these seven distinguishing marks you may know false teachers, shun them and so deliver your souls out of their dangerous snares. And that you may, my prayers shall meet yours at the throne of grace. Thomas Brooks

Scotland trip

Bro. Shane Sands wrote a great piece about our trip to Scotland. Glory to King Jesus !! Prayer, Preaching, Hearts Broken, & Repenting! Posted by Shane Sands on June 25, 2012 at 11:50pm 11 Deliver those who are being taken away to death, And those who are staggering to slaughter, Oh hold them back. Prov 24:11 (NASB) How successful is open-air preaching and 1 on 1 witnessing? What does a result of weeks/months of fervent prayer and fasting look like? In the city of Glasgow, Scotland...it is manifested, described, revealed as broken hearts, questions about eternity, and people repenting. From the beginning Jeff Rose has impressed upon the team the necessity and importance of prayer....we are to be prayer warriors, men who humble themselves before the Throne of GOD diligently seeking HIS face. That is why before the teams ever came to Scotland...there was weekly prayer conferences for that very purpose. That is why appeals to you (Who are reading) and to the local Bodies of CHRIST were asked to be faithful prayer warriors. Unless the LORD builds the house the laborers labor in vain. Another aspect of this missions trip, a burden on Jeff's heart (As well as all who labor) is to proclaim the whole counsel of GOD. To boldly proclaim the gospel of the LORD JESUS CHRIST, but with compassion and grace; compelling and pleading with people to flee from the day of wrath. In our one to one witnessing...bring the Scriptures to bear so that CHRIST JESUS will be exalted and dependance upon the HOLY SPIRIT to break the hearts of hardened people. Saints, now, we come before you asking you even more to pray....and also....REJOICE. Ever since the end of the church service Sunday calling us to put on the full armor of GOD: 10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of His might. 11 Put on the full armor of God, so that you will be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil. 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places. 13 Therefore, take up the full armor of God, so that you will be able to resist in the evil day, and having done everything, to stand firm. Eph 6:10-13 the LORD has been pleased to let our eyes see and ears hear of HIS amazing grace. So what we have seen, we now make known to you. Since Sunday afternoon the schemes of the devil have come against us....yet the LORD led us in prayer and then those who preached...preached the Word even more intently and people were being broken hearted. As we had individual witnessing encounters peoples hearts were being pricked. There has been a lady, Hillary, who asked, "How do I repent?" and now the LORD burdened her heart to be in the house of GOD. There was Ellie and her friend who at first were very disrespectful, but after the preaching of GOD'S Word, when they were approached again by brother Frank....they were different...they apologized for their behavior and that of the crowds...they listened and and took materials with them. There have been amazing witnessing encounters which have occurred, not with the initial person(s), but with those who were listening not part of the conversation. Brother Robert had two individuals follow him over to cover from the pouring rain to continue because the LORD had burdened their hearts. Brother Paul was blessed to preach and witness to a hostel crowd, but by GOD'S grace to stand firm and to work in peoples lives. There have been so many people whom we have been blessed of the LORD to minister to in witnessing....many, to be sure, reviled and mocked, but more who with drawn faces had their eyes opened, their hearts exposed. Saints here are just a few of the people we ask you to keep in prayer...to share with your churches...to intercede on their behalf: Darren, Kirlen, Don, Ron, Ashley, Olivia, David, Sufyan, Iain, Ali, Scot, Shevel, Fodie, William, Jerry, Johnny, Muhammad, and Dave.....plus so many more like the lady, who after Brother Ken spoke and declared the LORD JESUS has been resurrected just busted out in tears!! Pray saints...pray! We have started to have many brothers and sisters come by and encourage/thank us for the work being done here in Scotland. They are being encouraged to go out and do the same. There was Rosh, a younger lady, who after receiving a tract...came back to pray for us and praise GOD for HIS faithfulness. But the two encounters I leave you with....must leave you with are the very reasons why I say REJOICE and now EVEN MORE pray! On Sunday while the Gospel of the LORD JESUS was being proclaimed an older man was sitting...listening and being brought before the cross. After the preaching Brother Ken went up to him. The man said he "was" a Christian at age 13, but fell away. He said there were things he heard which burdened him and he wasn't sure if it was to late for him. He asked Brother Ken, "Do you think it is to late for me?"...If your not in tears by now???? Brother Ken spoke with him and they prayed....the mans heart was broken....may now it be pleasing to the LORD to restore him. Then there is Audrey. Audrey is a young lady, who was walking by and heard the gospel being preached....she sat down to listen. When the preaching was over brother Shane Mahoney went over and started a conversation. She asked if Shane was a Christian. As the conversation progressed Shane brought up judgement day, GOD'S holiness, sin, and hell. She said she had never heard the gospel before and wanted to know how to be "SAVED." So the good news of the LORD JESUS CHRIST was given to her, to repent, and believe in the LORD JESUS as LORD and SAVIOR. With a real genuine godly sorrow, forlorn face...she turned to the LORD seeming to be blown away at what JESUS had done for her. The team prayed over her as she cried out in confession and repentance. She was given a New Testament, and directed to a local church....as the team was leaving...she said she would be there! Praise the LORD! Praise the LORD! HE has had mercy and given grace! We ask you to join with us and all the heavenly host in rejoicing over a sinner who has repented! Praise the LORD! Praise the LORD! Share with your local Body the good news of the grace of GOD being manifested in Scotland! Rejoice HE has granted you to join with and in this labor for HIS glory and kingdom! Praise the LORD! But now, even more, saints we humbly request you to even more be fervent in prayer. We know that no move of GOD goes unopposed by the evil one. Now is the time to stand in the gap....with all perseverance and petition to intercede. The LORD be exalted! Glory to GOD! Worthy is the LAMB! No King but CHRIST!

Let Glasgow Flourish

This once was the land of the Book. I just got back from Glasgow Scotland from a 12 day trip of preaching the Gospel in Glasgow and it is very dark and without Christ. Biblical Churches need to be planted there.
